I've also seen the programme, and found it rather alarming! Yes, what to do, thats the question. (If the programme answered this question in detail, I missed it) I cycle, and take the train, (even though I moan every so often for not having a car) and decided to switch to green electricity and buy organic where possible and recycle... But would that be enough? Is switching the lights off really making a difference? Maybe if the train services are improved, more people will use it - I hear southern trains introduced new trains and now only allow foldup bikes. mmmm...that doesnt sound like improvement, or am I missing something? Maybe politicians will throw some money at alternative energy sources - why cant we use lottery money for that instead of giving grants to dodgy artists who paint words on sheep? Maybe the US will join the green family, but I think it will take another disaster or 2 before they come to their senses. I dont think waiting for the politicians is going to be the ultimate solution. They seem to go where the voters go. And after the Iraq affair, I'm not so sure about that either. Maybe they just go wherever the next election campaign donation will come from...Would it help to vote for the Green Party? Are they capable of handling the complexity of running a country?
Yes I'm sorry I missed the programme. It's pretty logical and a bit difficult even for sceptics to put down.
The travel thing is very important, whilst we love the upside of cheap travel at almost a moment's notice it is extraordinarily wasteful. However we have allowed a market to be created on which millions of jobs now depend.
Other areas are also unwanted post, unnecessary packaging both provide occupations and are wasteful. The problem seems to be finding a balance which meets our expectations without destroying the planet.

'Think globally, act locally'
ReplyDeleteWe should all try and do something ourselves, but ultimately we need to persuade the politicians that this is a concern.

I've not read it yet, but there's an interesting article about this here.
